Hurray for summer and for all the hot, hot days that come with it!
This past weekend my family and I had our first yard sale and got rid of a TON of old stuff dating back to our college years! During the course of planning and implementing the sale I kept thinking about how all this real life stuff really translates well to online sales strategies! (Because evidently I can’t keep my brain from going back to work stuff for more than a few minutes at a time…)
Here are some scenarios that I noticed and how you can manage your online presence just like you would run a yard sale!
- Yard Sale (YS) I made a promise to myself that I wouldn’t do any work during the sale and focused on getting everything set up and organized.
- Business (Biz) I start work at 8:30am each day and I strive to pack it up and turn it off at 6:00pm each day. Otherwise I’m overworked and unproductive and that’s just no good to anyone!
- (YS) I made sure to say “Hi!” to everyone who walked into my yard store.
- (Biz) I always reply back to everyone who emails me to let them know I got their request and I am “on it”! I really appreciate that when I work with other people so why wouldn’t I want to show the same courtesy to my clients and prospective clients?
- (YS) Everything had a sticker and price point (thanks Mom!) and people knew what they were looking at without needing to ask.
- (Biz) My site has my pricing and rates on the site so that if anyone has any questions it’s all laid out for them. Try to make it as easy as possible for your readers/shoppers to buy your stuff and they will appreciate it.
- (YS) I got a pretty nasty sunburn on Saturday because I was a yard sale noob and didn’t put sun screen on. Even though I was standing in the shade for the majority of the day I still walked out and rearranged or talked with people or ran after my daughter who was “helping”. ALWAYS WEAR SUNBLOCK!!
- (Biz) Even your computer needs sunblock. A good anti virus or firewall will give you a great security force to combat anything that could get into your files and make you sad. Also, I have started putting everything out on a portable hard drive and on my Dropbox cloud just in case something does happen to my computer. (knock on wood)
- (YS) Soooo, along with the sunburn came the heat exhaustion on Saturday which was super fun. (insert sarcastic winking and finger shooting) The problem was that even though I was drinking water all day I wasn’t giving myself a break from the heat at all. In my mind I needed to be there for my customers but I ended up letting them down by feeling like crap the next day.
- (Biz) I need to do this with my business and I think a lot of people do as well. Giving 200% everyday all day is hard work so make sure to take the time for yourself and to recharge your batteries because if you aren’t working, nothing in your business will either.
Weekly Experiment
Try thinking about how you might be able to implement some of the strategies above into your marketing. Could you simply say “Hi!” to everyone who contacts you? Do you need to put a layer of sunscreen on your computer to make sure it doesn’t get burned? Or maybe you just need to be able to take a step back into the house for a breather.
Try out one of your new strategies this week and then hit the reply button and let me know how it worked or didn’t work!
