Crazy is all in your Head

(at least that’s what the voices tell me…)

Source: xkcd.com via Sara on Pinterest

I hope you all had a fabulous Turkey Day and got to spend some much needed time with your families and your turkey eating pants. I had a good time with family and with the crazy people at the Sandusky Walmart who REALLY wanted those $1.99 DVDs and $9 griddles… My mom thought those people were INSANE and couldn’t get out of that store fast enough, while my brother and I just thought the whole thing was hilarious and a sign of American consumerism. (ok that last part was probably just me…)

It’s kind of the same thing with your online marketing (not a very good segue but stay with me…).

Just because you think someone else’s plan is ridiculous, don’t count it out because it probably will work. People like Zappos and Scott Stratton of Unmarketing have started to change the way we see marketing, both online and off, and they’ve done it by NOT following what others are doing.

Example #1: Zappos

Zappos sells shoes and bags and lots of other rather awesome stuff but the best part about Zappos is the customer service.

Let me say that one more time…

The best part of Zappos is the customer service.

When was the last time you heard anyone say that the customer service was the best part of anything? I’m betting it’s not all that often. They have free shipping both ways, a 365 day return policy and Zappos has one of the most responsive Twitter accounts around so if you have an issue they will respond right away to help you out.

PLUS Zappos has also built their brand around having fun and enjoying your job so every employee is allowed to decorate their work space anyway they want, casual Friday is everyday and they even get free soft drinks at work! I mean come on, they have a comic book as their employee handbook!! How cool is that?!

Example #2: Scott Stratton

Scott Stratton is an entrepreneur who has built his brand around Unmarketing or marketing as a way of communicating with your clients/customers instead of pitching to them constantly. He’s a giant in the twitter world so a lot of his work revolves around using Twitter “correctly” as well as how to use other social media sites like Facebook so that followers don’t want to block you every 5 minutes.

One of my favorite UnMarketing stories is how he had both the most awful AND the most amazing customer service at a hotel breakfast buffet in the span of a few moments. It’s amazing what can happen when you go above and beyond to take care of your customers which is common sense but is also unfortunately skewed from the way most people operate their businesses.

Think about your wild and crazy marketing ideas and take a step back and think about what might actually work for you, because odds are you’re not as crazy as you think. Here’s a little video to get you inspired to be the “crazy” one and make awesome happen:

Dewey Read-a-Thon MidPoint Awesomeness

Saturday, October 22nd, 2011

1. What are you reading right now?

Just finished up Are You There, Vodka? It’s Me Chelsea and I’m on page 65 of Promise Not to Tell

2. How many books have you read so far?

Three; two children’s books and one audio-book

3. What book are you most looking forward to for the second half of the Read-a-thon?

I’m really hoping to finish up Promise Not to Tell before I eventually pass out

4. Did you have to make any special arrangements to free up your whole day?

Well I tried to make it a family fun day but my daughter was not as into it today as she was yesterday… Mostly I just tried to fit in as much reading time as possible with my free time I had.

5. Have you had many interruptions? How did you deal with those?

I had to go grocery shopping so I took my iPod and listened to the Are You There, Vodka? audio-book while I shopped. It worked awesome even though I did laugh out loud a few times and probably looked like a crazy woman laughing to herself in the cereal aisle…

6. What surprises you most about the Read-a-thon, so far?

I am actually really enjoying trying to read on a schedule! I didn’t think i would enjoy it but it’s kind of nice to have an end point in mind for a book.

7. Do you have any suggestions for how to improve the Read-a-thon next year?

Well the Read-a-Thon in general is pretty awesome; I am loving the hilarious blog posts!

8. What would you do differently, as a Reader or a Cheerleader, if you were to do this again next year?

I need to plan it out better next year so that I don’t have a client project, a craft show and a Read-a-Thon all on the same weekend!

9. Are you getting tired yet?

Kind of but I’m going to try to work through it. Maybe another cup of coffee wouldn’t kill me…

10. Do you have any tips for other Readers or Cheerleaders, something you think is working well for you that others may not have discovered?

Having the mix of an audio-book and a physical book and going back and forth between them has been great. Plus the audio-book allowed me to get up, move around and get some other stuff done while “reading” the book!

Phew, it’s be a really fun day so far and I hope to have at least one more book to add to my finished list by tomorrow morning!

Creating for Stress Relief

Thursday, October 20th, 2011

I’ve talked before about how important it is to be creative because it’s not a waste of time but this past week I actually saw it in practice!

As you may know, last week did not go exactly as I had planned. Instead of going to Chicago for a week of relaxation and me time I instead spent the week with my family in Northern Ohio. I had a great time with my family even though I’m pretty sure my daughter had MORE fantabulous time getting super spoiled the whole week!

Even though it wasn’t exactly as I envisioned I got a lot done that I wouldn’t have gotten done at home (trainings, banking, budgeting) and I got to spend some much needed time with my mom, dad and siblings.

I also attribute my good week to the fact that my daughter’s babysitter roped me into crocheting hats for a local craft fair this Sunday! Two weeks to make 30-some hats, head wraps and hopefully some stuffed animals. Phew! Thankfully my mom and sister were there to help make some hats with me and make a dent in my quota.

I was pretty disappointed about my plans being messed up but being able to throw myself into my crafting was a great way for me to push through to a happier mood and see the bright side of my plans being changed.

Having that creative outlet was super important for me and maybe for you it will be painting or writing  or singing or designing vintage reproduction clothing(give me a call…). Whatever you creative outlet is let it be your way of calming down and enjoying yourself.

Oh and if you’re in the Hamilton, Ohio area and want to meet me in person and buy a hat from me, the craft fair will be on October 22nd from 10-4:00pm at the Hamilton Elks (4444 Hamilton Middletown Road)!

I’m rather excited to see how this goes! It may be a new blog post in the making; either “How to do a Craft Show right” or “How NOT to do a Craft Show” hehe

  • What are your creative outlets when you need to change your mood?
  • Maybe your creative outlet is being still and meditating. How is that feeling different than throwing yourself into a new project?
  • What are your tips and tricks for making a craft show spectacular?

Music and the Art of Procrastination Maintenance

I've chosen disco

Found via Pinterest

This month has been full of music for me! I hadn’t been to a concert in a LONG time (yes, I know I’m old…) and this month I got to see two of my favorite bands, A Perfect Circle with my husband at the beginning of the month and Incubus with my good friend Emily this past weekend! Each concert was awesome and amazing in their own ways but both put me in very different frames of mind afterwards. A Perfect Circle is a little bit rock and a little bit “sad bastard music“, so afterwards I was a little introspective and a bit meloncholy but I LOVED the concert so much. This past weekend after the Incubus concert I was again introspective but a lot more energized because they have songs that make you think but also put on a much more energetic concert.

Being empathetic and understanding how music afects your mood and ultimately how you work is an important peice to the work day balance.

Today is going to be interactive so get out your notebook! (Yes, YOU. Don’t give me that face, you’ll enjoy it!)

  • Take a a minute or two and wrtie some situations or emotions that you come across on a normal basis at the top of each page. For example, my notebook has “When I’m scared to do something”, “When I have the blues”, “When I’m writing”, “When I’m in a nasty mood and need to shake it off”, and so on.
  • Now, start thinking about the songs you love and start writing them down. Go through your iTunes, write down songs from the radio, think of bands and then narrow them down to individual songs. You can start off with a long list of your favorite songs or you can start placing them in categories as you go.
  • Once you have at least 10 songs in a category, go to your iTunes or to Spotify and start creating your playlist! You could also go to YouTube and create a playlist there as well and watch the videos along with the songs if you need the visual to get up and shake your booty! : )

So now you’re asking, “This is great but….why did we create these playlists?”

Being a Creative is all about being creative in everything you do, even if it doesn’t feel very “creative” at the time. So now when you have a rewrite that needs to be finished by Monday or you need to get the house cleaned before your in-laws show up, you can crank up your “When I need a kick in the butt to get things done” playlist and push through! Or maybe you’ve been staring at a peice of paper, canvas or cloth for a good hour and haven’t made anything, put on your “When I need inspitation” mix and you’ll get the creative juices flowing!

Your playlist will be completely different than my playlist or even your friend’s playlist because we all experience music in a different way, but that’s the fun part! Here’s a peek into my “When I need to dance and shake my cares away” playlist on YouTube! I am warning you though, you will feel a tingling sensation and the urge to move so be prepared for awesome dance moves.

Resistance is Futile

Thursday, August 25th, 2011

I recently read two books by Steven Pressfield called Do the Work and The War of Art: Break Through the Blocks and Win Your Inner Creative Battles and they were both rather amazingly awesome sauce. I highly recommend getting one or both of these books if you are a writer, an artist or hope to become a writer or an artist someday soon. Heck these books are fabulous for any kind of entrepreneur who needs to get past a road block and get their business rolling again.

In the books Pressfield talks about his idea of Resistance and how that, not fear, is the reason we don’t make our creative ideas reality.

Resistance is procrastination.
Resistance is your family.
Resistance is your inner monologue.
Resistance is your shiny object syndrome.
Resistance is that OTHER really great idea that you just HAVE to make happen right this minute.
Resistance is your fear.
Resistance is anything that keeps us from doing our life’s work.

“Rule of Thumb: The more important a call or action is to our soul’s evolution, the more Resistance we will feel toward pursuing it.”

- The War of Art: Winning the Inner Creative Battle

These books could not have dropped in my lap at a better time. There is so much change and so many scary things on my plate right now and I am excited about each and everyone of them now! It scared the bejesus out of me to drop down to a part-time work load but once I made the decision it was like a weight was lifted off of me! I’m scared and nervous about auditioning for a play next week but I’m going to do it anyway. I realized that I was scared of these things because there are the right decisions for me, and I just need to do them.

It also goes for writing and creating in general. The manuscript isn’t going to magically complete itself even if you stare at it REALLY hard. This is not Bed Knobs and Broomsticks and although magic IS real it doesn’t work like that. Creating is hard but it’s not impossible, Resistance just makes it feel that way sometimes.

So, how can you start “doing the work” instead of always battling Resistance?
Here are some things that have helped me so far:

  • Find a kick ass life coach. I have worked with several amazing coaches and each one has given me a new tool to use. Two that I highly recommend are Michelle Ward and Lisa Hunter. Two very different coaching styles but they are both equally awesome sauce!
  • Take some time to sit and rediscover yourself and your passions. I had no idea I missed acting and musical theatre so much until I started working out what my passions really were and music and performing always popped to the top of the list!
  • Decide right now that your project is a priority.  Wake up in the morning and start work on it even if you have other important things that need to be done. Feeding your soul is the top priority from now on.

Oh and I have a bonus for you this week!
Here’s a video where Mario Forleo interviewed Steven Pressfield about his book and about how to deal with Resistance!
(Unfortunately the book giveaway is over but I still HIGHLY recommend getting the book or books!)

“Most of us have two lives. The life we live, and the unlived life within us. Between the two stands Resistance.”

- Steven Pressfield

Zombies and the Art of Being Furiously Happy

Thursday, August 18th, 2011

This past week I was perusing my Feedly blog feeds, checking in on my favorite blogs and I saw this post from Wil Wheaton about The Bloggess.

Did you click through to watch the video? If not, (lazy people….) click on the video below to watch the video.

Oh, but be sure you put your small children in another room…. it’s awesome and hilarious but not too safe for the tiny ears.

Don’t worry, I’ll wait…

The Art of Being Furiously Happy

Would you have joined in on the fun or would you have been like me and stepped to the side, secretly wanting to jump into the madness? Even if you don’t approve of her use of fabulous curse words I hope the idea hit home for you like it did for me.

Being furiously happy is not something that other people have, it’s something everyone has the ability to find.

For me, being furiously happy comes down to leaving room in my life for my passions. I took some time to sit with myself, work through a workbook and made a plan of attack for my happiness. I get so caught up in work and family and doing things the way I “should” that I had to really spend some time this weekend and remember what my true passions were.

Here’s the start of my list of ideas on how to become furiously happy in my own life.

Feel free to borrow one or more of these because I know they’re all pretty awesome.

  • Try out for a community theater play/musical.
  • Start leaving inspirational quotes everywhere I go.
  • Get dressed up in full vintage style everyday (or at least throughout the work week).
  • Finger paint with my daughter.
  • Dance in the middle of a store with my daughter more often.
  • Start a blog about one or all of my passions (music, movies, books, weight-loss tips, crafting, spirituality).
  • Start a video channel on YouTube that is just me singing in the car to the radio.
  • Take up belly dancing.
  • Sit outside for at least 10 minutes a day.
  • Learn how to sew a swing dress.
  • Create a meditation space.
  • Always keep a fantastic book on my Kindle for emergency reading sessions.

to be continued…

That video switched something on inside of me and I hope it switched something on for you as well!

Weekly Questions:

  • What do you think I should do first that’s on my list?
  • What do you think should be added to the list?
  • What did you put on your list?
  • What are you putting off that scares the pants off of you?
  • How can you start to invest some time for your passions and make them a priority again?

Bonus Challenge:

Go out and do something off of your list.
Go out and do something ridiculous.
Go out and do something that feeds your soul.
Go out and do something that will make you furiously happy!

Creating a Happy Place

Thursday, August 4th, 2011

Whether you’re an artist creating your new masterpiece or an author putting the finishing touches on your new novel, everyone needs a happy place to get those creative juices flowing. (Note: Your happy place may or may not look like this.)

This past week I’ve been reorganizing and setting up my “office” – in my bedroom….

This is not my office but it would be awesome if it was….

I know it’s far from the perfect solution but it’s MUCH better than where I was before, in the middle of the living room! Until we get the basement finished and I can have my own room with a door *sigh* I am making this work and enjoying the “privacy” (which just mean that my daughter only comes in to see me every 5 minutes as opposed to every 2 minutes…)

Now that I’ve been up here for a week or so I’m really excited about how much better I feel with my semi private working area. I still have some decorating to do and we’re planning on building a little divider so that I’m not staring at the bed and longing for a nap while I’m working on a client proposal but the work is so much easier now.

Here are a few things that I have been working with and some things to consider when setting up your own work area!

• Color
Take a color/style quiz and find out what your happy colors are! I originally thought that blue and green were great business colors and would get me working hard, but I found that I need to be in a bright and energetic room in order to get my juices flowing. The plan is to paint one wall creamsicle orange and then use a light blue as an accent color! So excited!

• Lighting
You may already know that you need a bright room to get your writing done OR maybe you need a dim mysteriously lighted room to get your deep thoughts rolling for that teen vampire novel you’re working on… If you’re like me, I need a really good lighted area to work so I situated my desk in front of a bright window and I’m still searching for the perfect lamp to add to the corner. So far, just being able to look outside and see the sun has energized me and kept me going throughout the day!

• Music
I really like having something in the background when I’m working so music is a big deal for me when I’m doing something tedious or something where I’ll be writing for a long period of time. Create a Pandora playlist of good background music or create a genius mix of your iTunes songs! Podcasts are a great idea as well but be sure you don’t get caught up with the topic and get distracted from your work.

• Set Up
Do you work best at a desk in an office OR do you work best outside under a tree? Do you love your laptop OR do you love your dual monitor setup? Try out a few setups and see where you do your best work. For me, I would love to be able to work outside all the time but I get too distracted by crazy neighbors or barking dogs or creepy bugs… SO I have my window now and it helps me have the nearness of nature but still allows me to focus.

Weekly Exercise:

Where do you do your best work? What can you do to make your office area work the best for you?

Try out some new set ups, colors or a new kicking office soundtrack and let me know how it goes down there in the comments!

I enjoy having a creative Dobby in my walls!

Friday, August 20th, 2010

This has been around for a year or so but I just watched it today and loved it. Get a drink or a snack, it’s about 20 minutes of pure wonderfulness.

I have to admit that I haven’t read Eat Pray Love yet, and yet is the key word because it’s on my list after watching that talk.

I love the idea of separating the genius from the person. Who wouldn’t want a magical fairy or an invisible house elf there to help you through tough creative blocks or even pick your spirits up when you were down. I don’t think for one minute that I haven’t done the time or put in the work to make my business work or my family happy, but it’s nice to think that if things aren’t going picture perfect sometimes it’s just because Dobby the house elf is sitting down on the job.

I know that I have sat in the presence of something more than myself when it comes to my creative life. Unfortunately it hasn’t come in the form or an international best selling book but it did show up one night at a band concert. It was as though everything aligned and I couldn’t play a wrong note even if I tried. After that night it was hard to realize I wasn’t going to go on to make millions in an orchestra because the next day I was back to my regular mediocre self.

That moment on stage was a special moment but it was just for me. No one else knew what I was feeling and probably no one noticed that I totally rocked that concert! Having those moments to yourself is important because it boosts yourself up without relying on anyone to do it for you. Just knowing that for one minute I was capable of perfection has pushed me to try new and great things.

I took away from that the realization that there are moments in life that define who you are and there are moments where you are more than what you thought you were to help push you forward. Being motivated from within (with or without Dobby the house elf’s help) is important to moving forward with those big projects you have on the horizon. Being motivated doesn’t take the fear away or the what ifs that creep into your thought process when you’re working on a project but it definitely ads a bumper.

Question the Rules: Rebel with a Cause!

Thursday, April 29th, 2010

Have you ever wondered what happened to that rebel who wanted to start their own business and live the life they wanted? Maybe they got crushed by other people’s opinions or maybe they wanted to blend in and make their business just like everyone else’s because that’s what they thought they had to do (That was me…).This week Johnny B. Truant and Lee Stranahan have put out a new program called “Question the Rules” geared exactly for that purpose; to help you bring that crazy dreamer/rebel back and focus on making your business kick ass! Both guys are hilarious and genius in their marketing so it shouldn’t surprise anyone that this program is awesometastic!

Over the past few months I have been undergoing a transformation of not only my business but my mindset as well. As you might know I started my business as a Vanilla VA and planned to work with anyone and do anything that would bring in the money.  It took some time and some help from my coach to realize that I wasn’t Vanilla and I was not being true to myself. I am a wild and crazy awesome quirky person who also happens to be a kick ass Virtual Assistant! I chose to bring that to my business by rebranding and reexamining my marketing to include my quirky side in a professional way!

I am SO much more aware that what I think is “professional” – boring and stuffy – is fine for some people, but not for me. It took some times but I have gotten away from comparing myself to everyone and just living in my truth that I am a . This program has really cemented my philosophy that people will want to work with me because of ME not how many yellow highlighted text areas I have or how many cold calls I make! Of course you philosophy could be completely different and that’s ok; that’s kind of the point!

Johnny and Lee’s program takes it a step further though and goes into how to set goals that will actually work with my beliefs instead of focusing on what I “should” be working towards. My favorite section though is on networking outside of the box and how you can network yourself and your business without feeling like a creepy salesman which is my ultimate fear when surrounded by people at a networking event!

Right now they are launching the program at a crazy price break of $97 and after Saturday (5/1) it’ll jump up to its final cost of $397. So if you are ready to start putting some F-U-N into your business instead of boring and stuffy check out Question the Rules and starting running your business the way you want to! Being yourself and not playing by the rules could be the thing that makes you stand out and be memorable and ultimately get that sale or that new client!

Full disclosure, some of the links in this post are affiliate links but that doesn’t mean I’m a slimy salesman; I really LOVE this program otherwise I wouldn’t be telling you about it here! ;)

The gentle art of the business card

Tuesday, March 23rd, 2010

I finally ordered my new business cards and they should be here next week! This process really took far longer than I anticipated because I was still looking for the “perfect” card. It was rather like that scene from American Psycho where the lawyers are all comparing business cards. Of course mine isn’t bone or off white, they’re bright and exciting – like me – which is exactly what I was looking for in my cards!

So I ordered them, thinking that I had decided on some pretty unique, memorable and awesome cards to hand out at the IVAA Summit in Phoenix this April!

THEN I found this video and it made me appreciate that no business card was ever going to be as good as this guy’s card so my search for the perfect card was just ridiculous! ;-)
